#Enough National School Walkout

To the FIT Community:   As you may know, a 17-minute school “walkout” will take place nationally on Wednesday, March 14th  starting at 10:00 am.  Called #Enough National School  Walkout,  it is a student-led campaign responding to the killing of 17 people—largely students— at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida last month.   As I mentioned in an earlier memo, FIT will be participating in the walkout.  Students, faculty and staff are all welcome to join—but of course,  participation is fully voluntary.   In order that it be conducted in the spirit developed by the national campaign, I would like to share the following guidelines:   The walkout will be peaceful in order to properly respect and commemorate the 17 students and school officials whose lives were lost. To remind people of the event, five minutes prior to 10:00 am there will be a public announcement about the walkout—followed by an announcement at 10:00 am so that community members can exit their classrooms and offices as quickly as possible. We encourage the use of the corridors or related external spaces closest to the classroom or office you occupy. The breezeway between the Dubinsky Student Center and the Business and Liberal Arts Center may be used by those near that space. At 10:17 am, a public announcement will indicate the end of the walkout and participants will return to their classrooms and offices. The color orange has been selected to symbolize the Stoneman Douglas High School murders. All are welcome to wear orange, whether actively participating or not.   The FIT walkout is being coordinated by the Enrollment Management and...

UN Youth Assembly Recap

FIT students Ishani Shah and Ryan Donohue don’t just want to learn about social development issues, but also solve them. Ishani, Director of Sustainability, and Ryan, Treasurer for SGA, participated in the 2018 Winter Youth Assembly at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York City from Feb. 14-16. The three-day conference brought together around 1,000 youth volunteers from more than 100 countries to discuss the importance of innovation, civic engagement, and collaborative partnerships. The 21st session of the annual event focused on the theme, Innovation and Collaboration for a Sustainable World, and looked in depth at five goals on the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Clean water and sanitation Affordable and clean energy Sustainable cities and communities Responsible consumption and production Life on land (protecting ecosystems) “The purpose of the conference is to not only discuss ideas, but also how they can be applicable in your country. What works in one country might not work in another because every country has a different set of economic indicators, such as life expectancy, income levels, and population” said Ishani. “The world is such a vast place and with all that goes on right here in NYC, it is sometimes easy to forget the problems that many people face. Participating in the youth assembly allowed me to see the world in a more global perspective and let me connect with other youth who are passionate about global change” Ryan added. Ishani is working on trying to bridge the gap between international organizations like the United Nations and WHO  with well recognized institutions like FIT. She feels that FIT students have...
