#Enough National School Walkout

To the FIT Community:

As you may know, a 17-minute school “walkout” will take place nationally on Wednesday, March 14th  starting at 10:00 am.  Called #Enough National School  Walkout,  it is a student-led campaign responding to the killing of 17 people—largely students— at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida last month.

As I mentioned in an earlier memo, FIT will be participating in the walkout.  Students, faculty and staff are all welcome to join—but of course,  participation is fully voluntary.   In order that it be conducted in the spirit developed by the national campaign, I would like to share the following guidelines:

  • The walkout will be peaceful in order to properly respect and commemorate the 17 students and school officials whose lives were lost.
  • To remind people of the event, five minutes prior to 10:00 am there will be a public announcement about the walkout—followed by an announcement at 10:00 am so that community members can exit their classrooms and offices as quickly as possible.
  • We encourage the use of the corridors or related external spaces closest to the classroom or office you occupy. The breezeway between the Dubinsky Student Center and the Business and Liberal Arts Center may be used by those near that space.
  • At 10:17 am, a public announcement will indicate the end of the walkout and participants will return to their classrooms and offices.
  • The color orange has been selected to symbolize the Stoneman Douglas High School murders. All are welcome to wear orange, whether actively participating or not.

The FIT walkout is being coordinated by the Enrollment Management and Student Success office.  As we approach March 14th, you will see other notifications about it  in other venues throughout the campus.   I am very pleased to support this event and am particularly pleased that it came to us through concerned FIT students.  I hope it will provide an opportunity to  mourn  as a community the cruel  loss of life as well to contemplate ways to prevent its reoccurrence.
